A modern software tool has been developed for the construction, maintenance and visualisation of mono- and multilingual thesauri. Presently, it's major application is the visualisation and maintenance of the Thesaurus of the Environmental Catalogue of Data Sources and of the European Environmental Thesaurus GEMET (General European Multilingual Environmental Thesaurus), comprising 12 languages.
"The products "THESshow" and "THESmain" are delivered in the frame of a licence agreement and may be fully adapted to customer-specific requirements. They can be used for the easy representation of the hierarchical structure of thesauri as well as for structured information of institutions. A software licence agreement may be purchased using the order form.
Several thesauri can be handled simultaneously with the possibility to exchange data between thesauri. Each thesaurus may contain terms in up to 30 languages. It is possible to associate each term of the thesaurus to external databases. In this way, the incorporation of micro-thesauri and other external tables is easy to handle.
The software package comprises beside some utilities, the programme THESmain for construction and maintenance and THESshow for visualisation. The construction of a thesaurus is usually performed within a small team. The completed thesaurus is employed by a great number of users. This causes different software requirements from the construction and the visualisation view. Commercially available thesaurus maintenance programmes are often only available in paper form. Therefore, a combined software package, to be used for both requirements, has been developed, comprising the identical essential features of both programmes.
